About

Sulwhasoo is a Korean skincare brand under Amorepacific, built on Korean herbal medicine and an Eastern idea of balance. Its collections are named for what they run on — First Care for the first-step serum, Concentrated Ginseng for the ginseng line, alongside Essential, Jin Seol and Lumiwise.

The claims it publishes are specific. The First Care Activating Serum runs on what it calls LYMPHANAX, a ginseng extract fermented for 500 hours — twenty days — to maximise a saponin it names as G17, combined with an E.G.R 3 Technology and a Jaum Activator, a proprietary blend of five Korean herbs: peony, rehmannia, sacred lotus, white lily and solomon's seal. The Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Cream is built on Ginsenomics, which it says amplifies rare compounds in ginseng, and Ginseng Peptide, a six-peptide blend.

Three things are worth unpacking: what ginsenosides do, what a long ferment changes about a botanical, and how to read a signature-ingredient name on a label.

Recommended

  • Snow Aqua 0 Ginseng Deep Cleansing Oil

    nooni$294.4 (54)

For the cleansing oil job, and it does carry ginseng — the brand puts the ginseng seed oil at 0.12%, so read it as a supporting note. Water-free and built on twelve plant oils, which is what shifts sunscreen and waterproof makeup. Massage into dry skin, emulsify and rinse.

  • Red Exosome Skin Booster

    Differ&Deeper$75

For the first-step booster job, the closest thing we send to an activating first serum. Ginseng-derived vesicles are confirmed in the list alongside rice callus extract, niacinamide, panthenol and a long amino acid and berry complex. Single-use ampoules, after toner and before serum.

  • SEOUL 1988 Serum : Retinal Liposome 2% + Black Ginseng

    K-Secret$244.6 (36)

For the ginseng serum job, the most on-theme formula we send: panax ginseng root sits high in the list, with burdock, cnidium, dioscorea, tree peony and rehmannia roots further down. Retinal liposome at 2%, an encapsulated form that releases gently, with niacinamide and bakuchiol alongside. Start two or three evenings a week.

  • Vegan Kombucha Tea Sleep Mask

    Dr.Ceuracle$244.5 (53)

For the overnight mask job, and it earns its place twice over: kombucha extract carries the hydration while bakuchiol, a gentler alternative to retinol, does the renewal work overnight. Aimed at dry skin, as the last step at night, and a good partner to a ginseng-led routine.

  • Second Skin Mesh Matte Cushion 21 IVORY

    hince$29.54.3 (24)

For the cushion job. A mesh dispenser meters out a thin layer that builds with light tapping, and the finish is properly matte with a blurring effect on pores. We send the 21 Ivory shade. It's a makeup step rather than a sun-protection one, so wear it over your sunscreen.

Worth it?

Start with ginsenosides. They're the active saponins in ginseng root, and the reason the plant has held its place in Korean skincare for centuries: well studied as antioxidants, comforting and conditioning on skin. Ginseng is a glow-and-comfort ingredient, which is exactly what a first step is for. The booster below works the same way: ginseng-derived vesicles alongside niacinamide, panthenol and rice callus extract.

The 500-hour ferment — twenty days — is a real processing step, and a useful one: fermentation breaks the larger saponins into smaller, more readily absorbed forms, which is why so many Korean houses ferment their botanicals. The ginseng serum below pairs panax ginseng root with retinal, so the botanical and the active each do what they're best at.

Jaum Activator and Ginsenomics are Sulwhasoo's own names for its blends. What tells you more than the name is the list underneath it, and Sulwhasoo doesn't hide it: peony, rehmannia, sacred lotus, white lily and solomon's seal. That is a herbal-medicine formula carried across into skincare, so you can see which plants were grouped and why.

The cleansing oil below carries ginseng too: its ginseng seed oil is stated at 0.12%, a supporting note, while twelve plant oils do the work of lifting sunscreen and makeup.

We don't carry Sulwhasoo itself. For each of these jobs, though, we send an alternative we rate highly — the five picks below.

How to use

For Sulwhasoo's First Care Activating Serum: after your morning and evening cleansing ritual, apply three pumps to damp skin with your fingertips and press the serum into skin with an open palm for increased absorption. For the Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Cream: after serum, dispense a pea-sized amount between fingertips, massage to warm it slightly, then apply evenly over the face and neck in a continuous lifting motion, pressing lightly. The picks above follow the same shape: oil cleanse, booster, serum, overnight mask, cushion last.

Questions

What are ginsenosides?

The active saponins in ginseng root, well studied as antioxidants. On skin they work as comforting, conditioning support.

What does fermenting a botanical extract do?

It breaks larger plant compounds into smaller, more readily absorbed forms — why fermented botanicals are so common in Korean skincare.

What does a trademarked complex name tell you?

That the blend is the brand's own recipe. The list underneath the name is where you see which plants went into it.

How do I tell if a signature ingredient is present in a meaningful amount?

Entries run in descending order down to one percent, so a botanical listed after the preservatives is present in a tiny quantity.

Do herbal formulas suit sensitive skin?

Often, yes. Plant extracts are complex, though, so introduce a new one on its own and give it a few days.
