A'pieu

A'pieu is a Korean beauty brand run by ABLE C&C out of Myeongdong in Seoul, split between skincare and colour, and it describes itself as vibrant but sincere.

Its lines are named for what they run on: Madecassoside for soothing, Mulberry for brightening, Lactobacillus for moisture, Fusidium for trouble-prone skin, and in colour Juicy-Pang, Born to be Madproof and Full Shot. Sun care sits under Pure Block, including the Pure Block Aqua Sun Gel.

Two of its published ingredient lists are worth reading. In the Madecassoside Cream 2X, centella asiatica leaf water is the first ingredient, ahead of water, and all four centella compounds appear by name — madecassoside, asiaticoside, madecassic acid and asiatic acid — with niacinamide above them, and lemongrass, grapefruit peel and ylang ylang oils further down, with limonene, citral and geraniol declared. In the Raspberry Hair Vinegar, vinegar is second, followed by raspberry fruit extract, lavender, tea tree and rosemary, three hydrolysed proteins and cetrimonium chloride.

What centella leaf water buys you, what an acid does to hair, and what those oils mean for a soothing claim: three things worth unpacking.

Centella asiatica leaf water first. It is water the plant has been steeped in, standing in for the purified water a cream is otherwise built on. The real work is done by the four compounds named further down. The B5 barrier cream below pairs madecassoside with panthenol.

Vinegar second is the better entry. Hair cuticles lie flatter in acidic conditions and lift in alkaline ones, and lifted cuticles catch on each other — tangling, frizz, dullness. Many shampoos sit mildly alkaline, so an acid returns the surface to where it sits best. The slip afterwards comes mostly from the conditioning agents below the acid — the half the hair mist below delivers as a leave-in, with hydrolysed protein, ceramide NP and argan oil.

Those oils are the third thing. Lemongrass, grapefruit peel and ylang ylang, with three declared allergens, set the cream's scent profile: soft, warm and botanical.
