COSRX

COSRX is a Korean skincare brand founded in 2013. It explains its own name as cosmetics plus Rx, for prescription, and says its researchers work on formulations in the COSRX laboratory. The range is organised three ways at once — by product type, by concern, and by ingredient.

Its claims are mostly numbers on the label. The Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence is 96.3% snail secretion filtrate with 1,000 ppm sodium hyaluronate; the Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream is 92%, with 1,000 ppm hyaluronic acid. The Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser publishes a measured pH of 5.31 ± 1.00 and uses betaine salicylate as its BHA, alongside tea tree leaf oil. The AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner puts glycolic acid and betaine salicylate over willow bark and apple fruit water, and advises against pairing it with other acids, retinol or vitamin C.

Three are worth unpacking: the 96.3% figure, the measured pH, and betaine salicylate.

Start with 96.3%. It is a real number: nearly the whole bottle is snail secretion filtrate, so the filtrate is carrying the formula rather than decorating it. Snail mucin is a humectant first — it holds water at the surface and brings glycoproteins and hyaluronic acid with it, which is why it feels cushioning on dry skin. The snail essence below goes further: its entire list is snail secretion filtrate at 98% plus one humectant.

A published pH is the quietest claim here and the one that changes most. Skin sits at roughly 4.7 to 5.5; soap-based cleansers run far more alkaline, the source of that tight, squeaky feeling. A cleanser measured at 5.31 sits close enough to avoid most of that swing. Printing a pH to two decimals with a tolerance is unusually transparent: the ± 1.00 is the manufacturing range each batch is held to. The low-pH gel cleanser below is the swap we would make first.

Betaine salicylate, which COSRX uses in both its Low pH cleanser and its AHA/BHA toner, is a gentler salicylic acid derivative, labelled BHA either way. Read it as its own ingredient rather than as a percentage to line up against straight salicylic acid. The toner pad below covers all four acid families in one mildly acidic step, formulated for daily use.
