Centella

Centella asiatica turns up across Korean skincare in every format there is — cleansers, toners, creams, sunscreens, pads. It tends to be what a formula leans on when it needs to feel calm rather than active. Here's what it does and where it fits in a routine.

Centella asiatica, usually shortened to cica, is a herbaceous plant used in Korean skincare to calm the look of redness and support the skin barrier. Its activity comes from triterpenoid compounds such as madecassoside and asiaticoside. It works gradually rather than dramatically, which is why it shows up across every product category rather than only in targeted steps.

Benefits

The plant itself is a small, low-growing herb — you may know it as Gotu Kola or tiger grass — native to wetland regions across Asia, and used for centuries in traditional wound-care preparations before it reached a bottle.

Its activity comes from a group of triterpenoids: madecassoside, asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassic acid. You'll sometimes see one of them named on a label instead of the plant itself, and they aren't the same thing. Madecassoside is a single isolated compound; a centella extract or leaf water carries the whole mix.

The evidence behind it is better than most trendy plant extracts get. Those triterpenoids have documented anti-inflammatory activity, and asiatic acid specifically has research support for its role in wound-healing and collagen-related repair.

Where centella earns its place is skin that runs reactive or is recovering — after a breakout, after too much sun, or partway through building tolerance to a stronger active.

What it won't do is resurface, exfoliate, or shift pigmentation. If your concern is texture or dark spots, centella is a supporting player rather than the answer.

  • AC Clear Pure Cica Toner

    The Plant Base$224.5 (99)

Centella leaf water stands in for the purified water most toners are built on, so the extract is the base rather than an addition, with madecassoside and asiaticoside further down. The texture is watery and non-sticky, with a cooling agent that brings skin temperature down.

  • AC Clear Cica Cleansing Foam

    The Plant Base$19.74.2 (97)

Here the centella sits alongside mild acids — AHA, BHA, PHA and LHA — so it's a cleanser doing gentle exfoliation as well as soothing, aimed at oily and congestion-prone skin. It works into a dense foam and rinses without the tight feeling.

  • CICAVITA Soothing Pad

    AIPPO$364.5 (185)

A pad soaked in a centella complex, with niacinamide, madecassoside and tea tree alongside it. It takes the place of a toner after cleansing: sweep one over the face, or press it onto a patch that needs more and leave it briefly like a small mask.

  • Cica Cream

    MEEBAK$324.8 (31)

Lighter than the name suggests, with a non-greasy finish over hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan and ceramide NP. Worth knowing before you reach for it: this one also carries retinol and a peptide complex, so it works on texture and firmness alongside the soothing. Less purely gentle than cica in the title implies. Applied after serum.

  • Cica Redness Solution Sunscreen

    MEEBAK$303.5 (154)

SPF 50 with a green-to-beige tint that cancels visible redness while it protects, built on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide with ceramide NP alongside the centella. Coverage is light and buildable. The shade range is the limitation — it's made to blend into fair to medium tones.

How to use

A cleanser gets brief contact and rinses away, a toner or pad puts it on bare skin right after cleansing, and a cream or sunscreen keeps it there for hours. If you're calming something down, weight the routine toward the leave-on steps.

You don't need every step to contain it. Adding centella at one or two points — a cleanser and a moisturizer, say — meaningfully lowers the overall irritation load, and a fully centella-based routine isn't necessary to feel the benefit.

Layering two or three centella products is fine; the extract doesn't build irritation the way stacking acids or retinoids can. What matters is everything else in each formula. A cica cleanser carrying exfoliating acids, or a cica cream carrying retinol, still counts toward your total load of actives. Patch test a new leave-on product on your inner arm first if your skin reacts easily.

Questions

What does centella actually do for skin?

It calms the look of redness and supports the skin barrier, working through triterpenoids like madecassoside and asiaticoside. The change is gradual — less reactivity over weeks rather than a difference overnight.

Is cica the same thing as centella?

Yes, cica is the shorthand Korean packaging uses for Centella asiatica. Madecassoside and asiaticoside are different: those are individual compounds within centella, so a formula naming one is highlighting a single component rather than the whole extract.

How long before a centella routine shows results?

Reduced redness and better comfort often show within the first week or two. More complete barrier resilience takes several weeks of consistent use, and shows up faster if centella is in more than one step.

Can centella replace a treatment for acne or pigmentation?

No. It calms and supports the barrier, but it isn't a substitute for salicylic acid on acne or vitamin C on pigmentation. Those goals need their own ingredients alongside centella, not instead of it.

Can centella help with persistent redness?

It can make everyday flushing less noticeable, and it's low-risk to try. But redness that persists or worsens is worth having looked at by a clinician, since a cosmetic ingredient can't address an underlying condition.

Does a higher centella percentage mean a better product?

Not on its own. A high figure on the front usually refers to leaf water used as the base, which is a different thing from a concentrated extract. The rest of the formula matters just as much.
